Engine License Agreement
Plain-language terms for using Sektor Engine. Last updated July 14, 2026. This agreement covers the engine, Sektor Studio, the Player runtime, and the launcher.
The short version
The engine is free to use. Games you make with Sektor belong entirely to you: no royalties, no revenue share, no per-seat fees, ever. In return, do not copy, resell, or reverse engineer the engine itself. That is essentially the whole deal.
1. What you may do
- Install and use Sektor on any number of your own computers, for personal and commercial projects.
- Create, publish, and sell unlimited games and applications made with Sektor. You own your projects and games completely. Sektor claims no rights over your content and takes no royalties.
- Distribute the Player runtime as part of your packaged games. That is what it is for.
- Say your game was "Made with Sektor". We appreciate it, but it is not required.
2. What you may not do
- Copy, publish, sell, rent, or redistribute the engine, Studio, the launcher, or any part of them, except the Player runtime bundled inside your packaged games.
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the engine, or extract its code, shaders, or internal file formats, except where applicable law expressly permits it.
- Use Sektor's code or components to build or improve a competing game engine or middleware product.
- Remove or alter license notices, or use the Sektor name and logo in a way that suggests your product is made or endorsed by us. Factual statements like "built with Sektor Engine" are always fine.
- Use the engine for anything unlawful.
3. Pre-release software
Sektor is in active development. Features change, formats may migrate, and builds may contain defects. We work hard on stability, crash recovery, and data safety, but during early access you should keep backups of important projects.
4. Updates and the launcher
The launcher checks sektor3d.com for engine updates and release notes. Updates are verified against published checksums before anything is installed. You can always decline an update, though old builds stop receiving fixes.
5. Third-party components
Sektor includes carefully selected open-source components (for example Jolt Physics, ozz-animation, Recast/Detour, meshoptimizer, Luau). Their licenses are permissive, attributed in the engine's documentation, and impose no obligations on games you ship.
6. No warranty and limitation of liability
The engine is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for lost profits, lost data, or indirect or consequential damages arising from use of the engine. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, which for the free engine is zero.
7. Termination and changes
This license ends automatically if you materially breach it; shipped games made while the license was in good standing remain unaffected. We may update these terms for future versions of the engine; the version that shipped with your build applies to that build. This agreement is governed by the laws of Denmark.
